Liverpool face potential multi-million pound fines over its betting partner.
1xBet signed a four-year agreement with the European champions which entitles them to advertise on both the club’s offiicial website and at its Anfield stadium.
But the Russian-based gaming firm saw its UK operating license withdrawn after it emerged they had advertised on nearly 4,000 website with illegal content.
Tottenham and Chelsea both have similar arrangements with 1xBet similar to the Reds’ current deal but the former terminated all sponsorship links last month.
The Gambling Commission has written to both Liverpool and the Europa League holders to advise that any promotion of the company in the UK may be unlawful.
Penalties for promoting outlawed gambling firms include unlimited fines and up to 51 weeks in prison for anyone found responsible of the breach.
Liverpool declined to comment when asked by the Sunday Times about its continued links with 1xBet while Chelsea are said to be ‘monitoring the situation’.
A statement from 1xBet said: “We take very seriously the allegation that 1xBet’s brand has been promoted on prohibited sites, which is strictly against our policies, and we have launched an investigation.
“Pending the outcome… we believe it is responsible to temporarily suspend our advertising activity in the UK.”
Jurgen Klopp’s side previously had a three-year arrangement with online bookmaker BetVictor to sponsor its training kit which ended this summer.
Daniel Sturridge received a six-week suspension from football in July for breaching the Football Association betting regulations while at Anfield.
The erstwhile Liverpool striker is alleged to have passed on inside information about his own potential transfer away from the club in January 2018.
