Liverpool FC cannot take Europa League advantage for granted

Simon Mignolet insists that Liverpool cannot take their current advantage over Manchester United in their Europa League clash for granted.

Goals from Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino ensured that the Reds will take a two-goal cushion into next Thursday’s last 16 return leg against Louis van Gaal’s side.

Mignolet was largely untroubled by United’s front line, who failed to amass more than a solitary shot on target across the entire game.

But ahead of the trip to Old Trafford, the Belgiuim international is refusing to become complacent in spite of Liverpool’s comfortable first-leg advantage.

He said: “We saw it in the league against Man United when we conceded from a corner in the late stages of the game so it was very important to keep concentration throughout the whole game, make sure we defended the crosses and didn’t give any chances away.

“We didn’t concede many goals recently and we have to keep that going, especially in Europe, where it’s very important with the away goals.

“But then again [because] we’ve done it tonight it doesn’t mean we’ll go through to the next round. Manchester United at Old Trafford is always going to be a tough fixture.

“We’ve got an advantage, and that’s positive, and we’re happy with the way we played – but we have to do it again next week. We’ve got a whole week to focus on the game. It’s not happened very often this season with the amount of games we’ve played so that’s positive.”
