Frank de Boer favourite to succeed Roberto Martinez as Everton FC manager

Frank de Boer has emerged as the favourite to become the next Everton manager after leaving Ajax.

The 45-year-old’s departure was confirmed by the Dutch club this morning following six years in charge.

Roberto Martinez’s future at Everton appears increasingly ominous following last night’s 3-0 defeat to Sunderland, with a decision expected to be taken by the club’s board of directors today.

De Boer led Ajax to four Eredivisie titles during his time at the helm but fell short in his latest attempt following a 1-1 draw away at lowly De Graafschap last weekend.

Last week the Dutch legend’s agent Guido Albers suggested he would be interested in taking the reins from an under-fire Martinez this summer.

Speaking after this morning’s announcement, however, De Boer remained guarded on his next destination.

He said: “I began to realise it was time for something else – that is better for me and I think also for Ajax.

“What I will do, I do not know yet. A year without a club is also an option.

“I’ll see what comes my way.”
