A major transport route into Liverpool city centre will be closed for at least six months.
Great Howard Street, used by motorists who approach the city centre from places such as Litherland, Southport, Bootle and Crosby will close in May.
Roadworks are expected to cause sever distruption to motorists with the work expected to last for at least six months.
Liverpool council has said it would do everything it could to minimise disruption and sign post diversions.
The £32m project, paid by Department of Transport (DfT) funding is aiming to improve links between the city centre and the newly expanded Port of Liverpool.
The council also said the works include making Great Howard Street a dual carriageway and replacing a bridge on the road which crosses a disused rail line.
The replacement of the bridge alone will cost £9.7m.
Local businesses fear that they will be hit badly by the closure and they will lose out on passing trade.
The reason for the bridge being re-built is so that the disused rail line can be used to access the port via freight trains.
Liverpool council cabinet approved the plans in January saying it is a “a vital route for freight from the new Liverpool 2 deep water port” as well as the proposed £5bn pound Liverpool Waters scheme by developer Peel.
