A man has been arrested after a car crashed into several people in Liverpool city centre.
Police were contacted at just after 6pm on Monday following reports that the vehicle had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street.
The incident took place close to the end of Liverpool FC’s victory parade route after the club publicly celebrated winning the Premier League title.
Officers detained a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area at the scene after the car came to a stop.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the incident as ‘appalling’ in his immediate response to events along the city’s waterfront.
“We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening,” read a statement from the Anfield club.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident.
“We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident.”
Merseyside Police confirmed at a press conference that the man arrested at the scene was the driver of the car and are treating it as an ‘isolated incident’.
No fatalities were reported but 47 people suffered injuries including four children with 27 taken to hospital. Two have sustained serious injuries.

“The people of Liverpool have shown many times before that you are a strong community and you support one another.
“All of us at North West ambulance service share with you the frustration that this wonderful day has ended like this and we hope that those who have been injured make a speedy recovery.”
