The mother of James Bulger has called for a law against AI-generated videos of murdered children.
Denise Ferguson made the impassioned plea to the government after seeing videos generated of her son talking about his 1993 killing on social media.
Clips circulated on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram also depict the toddler’s abduction and even police interviews in which his killers deny any wrongdoing.
Ms Fergus claims that TikTok has not responded to request to remove the AI videos, which are considered illegal under the UK government’s Online Safety Act.
“It’s just words at the moment,” she told the BBC.
“They should be acting on it.”
Ms Fergus described the videos depicting her son as ‘absolutely disgusting’ and those responsible for them ‘don’t understand how much they’re hurting people’.
She added: “It plays on your mind. It’s something that you can’t get away from.
“When you see that image, it stays with you.”
The late toddler’s mother also revealed that she intends to raise the issue on Thursday during a scheduled meeting with justice secretary Shabana Mahmood.
