Police are investigating death threats made towards Everton FC defender Ramiro Funes Mori.
The Argentine international received a straight red card following a reckless challenge on Liverpool striker Divock Origi during the Blues’ 4-0 defeat on Wednesday which saw the 21-year-old stretchered off.
Merseyside Police have since been alerted to a number of tweets sent to Funes Mori’s various social media accounts, some of which were directed towards the player’s family, following the Merseyside derby clash.
Officers have said they were investigating the posts, which have since been removed from social media networks.
Yesterday, Mori publicly apologised for the horror tackle at Anfield.
He said: “I very much regret what happened yesterday,
“It was never an intention to harm a rival nor my colleagues leaving the field.
“And regarding Divock Origi, I fervently hope it’s nothing serious and know that was never my intention to hurt.
“I ask my apologies for what happened.”
