The “secret” bar is something that has grown in popularity in Liverpool, starting with 81Ltd and seeing the introduction of Ex-directory and now, just in time for Christmas, is a secret hidden adult grotto.
A non-descript door on Seel Street houses a festive wreath and a small buzzer in order for you to gain access. As many know, Seel Street is a lively street that is popular with partygoers, but the quiet, inviting entrance when the door swings open is worlds apart.
You are submerged into a festive grotto feel as soon as you head up the stairs that are adorned with a festive twig archway and that’s before you’ve even reached the bar area of 83. You are welcomed at the door by a member of staff who shows you in to the cosy surroundings.
The decor is luxurious, large leather couches and seats adorn the room. You are treated to stills and advertisements for all of your favourite Christmas films. Think Home Alone, The Grinch – the list goes on and on. Just above a festive fireplace is a large television that was showing the original Miracle of 34th Street. You are literally surrounded by all things Christmas and this is something I couldn’t get enough of.
Included in the £10 entrance price is your first drink – you are given a choice of Mulled Wine or a Homemade Irish Cream. My personal recommendation would be the Irish Cram, it was absolutely outstanding. As a big baileys fan, this could have gone either way but it was luxurious, delicious and definitely felt like a festive treat.
There is an extensive cocktail menu available that has something for everyone. There are some beers and wines also – everything you’d need for a festive drink. Prices are reasonable and in keeping with the rest of Seel Street so you won’t be overcharged just because of the Christmas theme.

The staff are excellent and the waiter service is welcomed – especially given the time of year. You can relax in the comfort of your seat knowing that as soon as your glass is nearing empty, a friendly face will take care of any further drinks orders.
One of the best bits, for me, was the Pigs in Blankets. Nothing says Christmas like these festive treats and they did not disappoint. They seemed to have a Cranberry glaze on them which was absolutely delicious and I could have easily indulged in another portion, or three.
I understand that you can also get Turkey Sandwiches however we did not try these, despite being told they were fantastic by staff and drinkers alike.
There are no shortage of festive menus available across Liverpool city centre for the next few weeks but nothing has the all out Christmas theme that Miracle on Seel Street does. For those who love Christmas, or those who just like a drink – this is sure to be a Christmas success.
