Four children were among 15 people rescued after a fire engulfed a block of flats in Fairfield.
The blaze happened during the early hours of Thursday morning in Hampstead Road.
Three engines from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service tackled the fire, recipe which had broken out on the ground floor of the four-storey building at around 12.30am.
All 15 occupants inside were safely rescued from the flat by emergency services while eight were taken to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and burns.
Firefighters remained on the scene for a further two hours although the cause of the fire is not yet known.
