Wirral man jailed for 8 year for historic child sex offences

Merseyside Police have welcomed the sentencing of Thomas Pope for historic sexual offences.

The 69-year-old, from Wallasey, was jailed for eight years today at Liverpool Crown Court, after pleading guilty to a number of child sex offences.

Pope admitted five specific counts of indecent assault and two specific counts of gross indecency with a child.

He pleaded guilty to five multiple incident counts of indecent assault and one multiple incident count of gross indecency with a child.

All the offences date back to the 1970s.

Pope was jailed for child sex offences for 12-and-a-half years in February and media reports of that sentencing led to the victim of these offences contacting police.

Detective Constable Becky Robinson, from the force’s Unity team said: “The victim in this case has been extremely brave in coming forward and reporting theses historic offences to police. Specially trained officers and lawyers in Merseyside Police’s Unity team have been by his side throughout the investigation and we hope that today’s sentence gives them some sense of justice.

“Time should never be a barrier to obtaining justice and as a force, we take every report of sexual offences extremely seriously, whether or not they are recent. Merseyside Police has dedicated officers within the force’s Unity Team, who are trained to both thoroughly investigate allegations and make sure that those reporting them are properly supported.

“I would like to take this opportunity to reassure anyone who has suffered a sexual offence that if you can find the courage to come forward and speak to us, we will deal with you sensitively and make sure that reports are properly and thoroughly investigated.”
