Storm Boelo cancels River of Light’s start

The start of the River of Light festival has been postponed by Storm Boelo.

Organisers of the annual free light trail across Liverpool city centre took the decision to defer its opening night on Friday (October 23) due to extreme weather warnings.

A warning was initially issued due to the arrival of Storm Austen which ran until 9pm but has been reissued for Storm Boelo from midday on Saturday to 9pm on Sunday.

The Met Office has forecast that winds between 55mph and 65mph are likely while some costal areas will see gusts of up to 70mph and 80pm during that period.

Wind speeds in the Liverpool area are expected reach as high as 49mph alongside heavy rainfall which is also expected to appear throughout Saturday until 9pm.

In a new statement on Visit Liverpool’s social media channels, organisers confirmed that River of Light will remain cancelled while they await conditions improving.

They said: “Due to further adverse weather conditions caused by Storm Boelo, this evening’s (October 24) River of Light event has been cancelled in the interests of safety.

“Please keep an eye on our social channels tomorrow for any further event updates.”

The severe weather has also impacted on other cultural events in the region.

Knowsley Safari Park confirmed it will temporarily close its doors on Sunday with the threat of winds above 50mph forecast during the height of Storm Boelo.

Horror attraction Newsham Scream Park has also announced that it remains closed for a second evening with organisers promising to reschedule cancelled bookings.

Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral has also restricted its operations to scheduled services with a Cream Classical event due to take place on-site postponed.
