Located within The Shankly Hotel, The Bastion is sure to be a hit with football fans from across the world.
Situated in the heart of Liverpool city centre, this is a beautifully appointed restaurant that pairs a relaxed laid back eatery with just the right amount of sporting history.
A sister restaurant to The Carpathia, located at 30 James Street, luxury can be expected despite the fact that The Bastion is said to be more laid back. Often used as a place to enjoy big sporting events from across the globe, it’s far more than just a sports bar.
The staff here are truly outstanding. Clearly Signature Living take care when selecting staff and they have done well to offer some of the best service I have ever experienced.
Everyone at The Bastion from the waitress to the executive chef went out of their way to make us feel welcome and for that they should be commended.
The menu is good, and varied. It has something for everyone, from luxurious high end steaks to stacked burgers – if you want this to be a special occasion or a laid back bite to eat, this menu provides it all.
We started with Gloucester Old Spot Ham Hock Terrine and Prosciutto Ham And Melon. Both starters were light and summery. The Ham Hock Terrine comes served with crisp focaccia, a delicious homemade piccalilli and dressed pea shoots.
Whilst the Prosciutto comes with chilli and sherry vinaigrette, black olives and basil which contrast very well with the sweet and salty of the meat. Both starters were well thought out and served beautifully.
For a main, I had the Hake which was served with Bacon and Puy Lentils. It came paired with pickled wild mushrooms, which were new to me, however they were absolutely delicious.
Everything complimented each other well on the plate and again was served beautifully in true Signature Living style.
My dining partner had the Welsh Black Rib Eye Steak which was cooked to absolute perfection – up there with one of the best steaks I’d ever tasted.
It came served with a large flat cap mushroom, tomatoes on the vine, cooked in garlic butter and with skinny fries on the side. One of the best Steak & Chips tasted, it is highly recommended.
For dessert I opted for the Chocolate Fondant which was served warm with salted caramel ice cream and a dark chocolate sauce.
It was perhaps not the most imaginative dessert – compared to the rest of the menu but it was still absolutely delicious and a pleasant finale to a lovely meal.
My dining partner went for the Lemon Souffle which was definitely the best of the two desserts. Served alongside ginger snaps and candied lemon’s – the contrast worked very well and was enjoyable.
The Shankly Hotel has gone from strength to strength since it’s opening less than a year a go and with a new roof terrace due for completion soon, excellent staff and a top class restaurant – it’s only going to get better.
