Liverpool identify Arne Slot’s likely successor

Andoni Iraola is in line to become Liverpool’s replacement for Arne Slot.

Slot was deposed as head coach after two years on Saturday following a season review by the Anfield hierarchy into the club’s failed Premier League title defence.

The search for the Dutchman’s successor has already commenced with Iraola already emerging as the firm favourite to take the reins on Merseyside.

Reds sporting director Richard Hughes hired the 43-year-old for his most recent role at Bournemouth, whom he guided to Europa League qualification last term.

He also worked with current left-back Milos Kerkez which led to the Hungary international’s £40 million switch from the Vitality Stadium last summer.

Iraola has been heavily sought since announcing his decision to leave the South Coast last month with a host of clubs pursuing the now free agent coach.

AC Milan, Bayer Leverkusen and Crystal Palace all expressed interest in the former Spain international, who is yet to make a decision on his next coaching destination.

Chelsea and Manchester United were also heavily touted with a move for Iraola before appointing ex-Liverpool hero Xabi Alonso and Michael Carrick respectively.

However Anfield chiefs are exploring other options for the vacant hot seat with Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeness and Pierre Sage of Lens also under consideration.
