Merseyrail trains halted by station evacuation

Liverpool Central has been evacuated after smoke was seen coming from a control room.

Moorfields station was also closed with all other underground stations on the Merseyrail loop having their power cut as a precaution on Tuesday (April 28).

Merseyrail have told rail passengers on the affected routes that their tickets will be accepted by Arriva and Stagecoach services until further notice.

Trains heading into Liverpool city centre were suspended as Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service investigates the cause of the smoke inside Central station.

A spokesperson said: “Fire crews are in attendance at Liverpool Central Station, Ranelagh Street, Liverpool after reports of smoke issuing from a building at the rear of the station.

“Crews were alerted at 12.14pm and on scene at 12.21pm, with two fire engines currently in attendance.

“In line with established safety procedures a full evacuation of the station and trains has been performed as a precaution. Trains have been suspended and electrics isolated so fire crews can investigate.

“There is currently no power to the loop meaning there may be some disruption to journeys, please go to Merseyrail.org or Merseyrail social media channels for more information.”
