Joey Barton has denied assaulting a man outside a Merseyside golf club.

Barton and Gary O’Grady were charged with Section 18 wounding with intent over an assault close to Huyton and Prescot Golf Club at the beginning of last month.

The ex-footballer, 43, was reminded in custody following the alleged attack on former non-league manager Kevin Lynch on the evening of Sunday, March 8.

Barton, of Widnes, appeared before Liverpool Crown Court on Tuesday (April 7) via video link from HMP Liverpool and entered a not guilty plea to the offence.

He will remain on remand ahead of seven-week trial beginning on September 1.

O’Grady was present at the court hearing but has been given until his next appearance on June 3 to enter his own plea in connection with the incident.
