A man who died in an attempted police stop was restrained by officers.
Lain Estridge passed away after his bike struck a stationary police van following the incident on Back Faulkner Street South last Friday afternoon (February 13).
Merseyside Police referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in the wake of the 23-year-old’s passing from his injuries in hospital.
The watchdog is continuing to investigate the force’s actions in relation to the incident and have undertaken further testing to establish a cause of death.
In an initial update on the case, the IOPC said it had established that Estridge was one of two men approached by police as part of a ‘proactive operation’ in the area.
One officer spoke to the other man while Estridge travelled away on the bike, which was approached by three officers prior to the impact with the stationary police van.
He was initially restrained on the ground before identifying that he was in need of medical attention and provided first aid before paramedics arrived at the scene.
IOPC director Amanda Rowe said: “It is important in cases like this that there is a thorough investigation to understand events surrounding the death, including the actions of police,” IOPC Director Amanda Rowe said.
“This will be carried out independently of police and our findings will be shared with Mr Estridge’s family, Merseyside Police and the Coroner in due course.
“Our thoughts are with Mr Estridge’s family and loved ones, as well as all those affected by his death.
“We have been in contact with the family and will keep them updated as our investigation progresses.”
