A local Labour councillor has been charged with a public order offence.
Cllr Joe Hanson will appear at South Sefton Magistrates Court on February 4 in connection with an incident which took place in September last year.
He is accused of causing alarm or distress following a public meeting the Rotunda building in Kirkdale, which he has represented for over 25 years.
Cllr Hanson denies the charge against him but has faced calls to step down from his duties in the council’s cabinet by the Liverpool Liverpool Demoncrats.
A spokesperson said: “We have been aware that Labour Cllr Joseph Hanson, Kirkdale West, has been charged with Section 4A of the Public Order Act and is set to appear before Liverpool Magistrates Court.
“At this time, we are calling on the Labour Party to suspend Cllr Hanson until criminal proceedings have concluded and for him to step down from his role as Chair of the Sustainable, Safe & Thriving Neighbourhoods Scrutiny Committee, and to resign from the Constitution and Standards Committee, Licensing and Gambling Committee, and Planning Committee.”
