Police officer charged for Christmas Eve death

A police officer has been charged over the death of a woman in Kensington.

Rachael Moore was struck by a Merseyside Police patrol car at Sheil Road on Christmas Eve in 2022 while on her way home from work as a carer.

The vehicle had been responding to an emergency call when it hit the 22-year-old.

An investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct was launched after the force referred itself in the wake of the incident almost three years ago.

PC Scott Thompson has now been charged with causing death by careless driving.

The 32-year-old is due to appear at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Monday (November 24) in connection with the fatal collision involving Miss Moore.

An inquest held into her death in 2023 heard PC Thompson attempted to help her before paramedics arrived on the scene, where she was pronounced deceased.
