Merseyside MP challenging Jeremy Corbyn for Labour leadership

Angela Eagle is set to announce plans to challenge for the leadership of the Labour party next week.

The Merseyside MP resigned from her post in the Shadow cabinet as pressure mounted on Jeremy Corbyn to stand down.

Labour’s deputy leader Tom Watson held emergency talks with emergency talks with trade union officials following Corbyn’s vote of no confidence from his parliamentary peers.

But Corbyn continues to resist calls to resign from within the party and has vowed to challenge any potential challengers in a new contest to be elected the new leader.

And Ms Eagle, who represents Wallasey, is expected to announce her candidacy to become the new head of the party on Monday.
