Stolen car driven wrong way down The Strand

Police are hunting the driver of a car that veered down the wrong side of The Strand.

Officers were called to the Liverpool waterfront at around 8.45pm on Monday after reports the Volkswagen Tiguan was stolen from Wood Street in the city centre.

The vehicle was spotted being driven on the wrong side of the Strand for a short distance while the road was closed to traffic for the Liverpool Celebrates festival.

It turned the wrong way into Brunswic Street before being found abandoned less than a mile away on Addison Street.

Superintendent Karl Baldwin said: “Road closure measures, including signs and cones had been put in place on some roads in the city centre by the event organisers of Liverpool Celebrates and a private traffic management company with the permission of Liverpool City Council.

“All of the measures implemented were approved by the Liverpool Safety Advisory Group, which is a multi-agency group.

“At that time of evening most of the people had left the area and roads were soon to be reopened.

“There are no reports of anyone being injured or any damage caused to any other vehicles or street furniture. Enquiries remain ongoing.”
