Slot explains reason for Klopp routine break

Arne Slot has explained Liverpool’s reason for ending a Jurgen Klopp tradition.

Slot is enjoying an unprecedented debut campaign at Anfield which now sees him reaching the Carabao Cup final after Thursday’s thrashing of Tottenham.

The Dutchman has also steered the Reds to the summit of both the Premier League and the Champions League’s group phase in his formative months.

But Slot revealed on Friday that a key ingredient to his flying start to life on Merseyside has been reversing a routine first introduced under Klopp.

During the German’s nine years at the helm, Liverpool’s squad habitually spent the night before home games based at hotel in the local area.

Slot, however, believes that his charges are better served preparing for games in familiar surroundings at home than venturing to an external base.

He said: “People tell me, and people tell me who know better, that you always sleep better in your own bed than a hotel bed.

“Sleep is a very important part of getting the best possible performance.

“It is not only the argument that they are at home with their families but also that they are better prepared for a game.

“If you use common sense you know you sleep better in your own bed than a hotel bed.”

The Liverpool head coach also admitted that Trent Alexander-Arnold could miss next week’s final-ever Merseyside derby clash at Goodison Park.

Alexander-Arnold sat out the rout over Spurs with a thigh issue sustained at Bournemouth which will now sideline him for the FA Cup trip to Plymouth.

“It’s difficult to say [for Everton],” added Slot.

“It’s like I said before, it’s not going to take months or even weeks but that’s only three days after the Plymouth Argyle game.

“We also don’t want to take too many risks with so many games coming up.

“But if he’s fit, we will use him.”
