A rally in protest at the UK’s decision to leave the European Union is set to take place in Liverpool on Tuesday.
Merseyside voted overwhelmingly to remain in Europe during last Thursday’s referendum elections, with 58 per cent of the local vote, but that support was not reciprocated around the country with a 52% of the population opting to back ‘Brexit’.
In the wake of the result, which also saw prime minister David Cameron resign, social media campaign ‘Liverpool Stays’ has gained traction and will take their message to the city’s streets this week, with a turnout of thousands anticipated.
“It’s time to gather to discuss next steps, to stand up for unity and to channel the city’s positive voices,” said the group in a statement on Facebook.
“Liverpool Stays is our mark of showing that, regardless of the EU Referendum result, we stand alongside the people of Europe to show we are inclusive, open and patient to understanding how we can make the Leave decision into a positive one for all.
“We stay with Europe!”
