Boxpark apologise for derby day promotion

Boxpark have apologised to Everton fans for their Merseyside derby promotion.

The retail and leisure complex’s first branch in the city opened in April but was soon accused of favouritism ahead of that month’s Goodison Park clash.

Promotional material for their screening of the April 24 clash centred on a Liverpool-supporting crowd while red lighting was used for the match itself.

Following criticism from numerous Blues fans, Boxpark’s CEO Ben McLaughlin issued a public apology on Friday via their Instagram page.

“When we opened Boxpark, back in April, our goal was to create a Boxpark for Liverpool, without bias,” read a statement.

“Our venues are built on our communities, and our decision to create an event aimed at one fan base for the derby game on the 24th of April is something we regret. In short, we got it wrong, and we apologise.

“Over the past few months, we’ve taken steps to ensure we head into the new Premier League season with a clearer view on how to be better.

“We’ve spoken with the club directly on the matter and had regular communication with senior members of official supporters clubs and fans.

“Our decision to delay any formal apology was to allow us to take the time to have positive, honest and constructive conversations to ensure we do everything to put things right.

“As fans, you are our priority. We’re working hard behind the scenes to ensure this isn’t an empty apology.

“Over the coming months, we’ll be able to share more about how we’re setting out to make things right and create an environment that is for all fans and the whole community.

“We are proud to be part of the city, and hopefully, in the future, we’ll be able to welcome you to Boxpark to experience everything we have to offer.”
