The Football Association have appealed against Jurgen Klopp’s punishment for his sending off in Liverpool’s win over Manchester City.
Klopp was charged with improper conduct after being sent off for reacting angrily to linesman Gary Beswick during his side’s October 16 win at Anfield.
An independent regulatory commission hit the Reds’ manager with a £30,000 fine but decided against imposing a retrospective touchline suspension.
However English football’s governing body confirmed on Friday afternoon that it will lodge an appeal against the outcome, reopening Klopp’s previous case.
“The FA can confirm that it is appealing against the independent Regulatory Commission’s sanction in relation to the recent case involving Jurgen Klopp after reviewing its written reasons,” read a statement.
“The independent Regulatory Commission fined Jurgen Klopp £30,000 for breaching FA Rule E3 during Liverpool FC’s Premier League game on Sunday 16 October 2022 against Manchester City FC.”
Klopp labelled last month’s decision as ‘the most expensive face’ he had made but was unsure whether a touchline ban would also have been warranted.
“I think it’s a lot of money but I heard it will be invested for something good, and that’s fine,” he said at the time.
“Should I have got a ban? I don’t know. I never was in the situation, I never had a red card, I didn’t ever have a yellow card as far as I know.
“I’m the wrong person that you should ask. I have no idea about what the usual things are.
“I had a touchline ban years ago in the Champions League with Dortmund, very similar situation, but obviously the Champions League is slightly different.
“I’m not happy or relieved or whatever. It’s just I was waiting for the punishment, take it, and then go from there.”
