A mother from Liverpool has spoken of her terrifying experience of an exploding piece of IKEA furniture that left her 14 week-old son injured.
The mother-of-two asked to remain anonymous, stated that the incident occured on Monday morning, as the IKEA cabinet exploded barely a metre away from her infant son.
“I was sitting at the desk in the front room, with the baby in his bouncer chair, with a blanket. I turned around and just heard this big bang and then he screamed.”
The baby suffered a cut to his face following the incident, however his mother stressed that the injuries could have been much worse.
“He was covered in the glass and when I went to pick him up I noticed the glass was all over the blanket. It was only really the fact that he had a blanket on that he got away without being cut really badly”, added the concerned mother.
The incident was reported to IKEA by the child’s mother, and the Swedish DIY giant intially offered a £10 voucher in compensation, before later offering a full refund, a £50 voucher and baby toys.
In view of IKEA’s paltry offerings of compensation, the mother stressed that her concern was for other customers that purchased the glass cabinet.
“I don’t want money or vouchers, I just want them to recall these cabinets because I don’t think they are safe, and this could happen to someone else.”
IKEA have also released an official statement on the incident.
“We are aware of the incident regarding the glass cabinet. The safety of our products is always the highest priority and our entire range is tested rigorously.”
“Whenever we learn of a possible fault with the design, material or manufacture, we investigate immediately and thoroughly. We have already been in direct contact with the customer to apologise and are currently investigating tbe matter further”, added the IKEA statement.
