A man was rescued from the River Mersey after a strong tide had pushed him towards the path of a moving cargo ship.
The 42-year-old got into difficulty when the anchor cable of his dinghy was torn, as he tried to tie it up.
Merseyside Marine Rescue Unit arrived to find the dinghy submerged, and the man drifting dangerously into the ship’s path on Saturday.
Local fire stations responded to an emergency call from the Holyhead coastguard, and the Marine Fire One rescue team was dispatched to rescue the man.
Ian Kay, who led the rescue effort, said the rescue team remained at the scene for 45 minutes and were eventually able to rescue the submerged vessel and its contents.
He said: “The occupants of the dinghy attempted to anchor, but the anchor cable had been ripped from the boat due to the strong tidal flow.”
“When crews arrived we found a dinghy submerged and a 42 year-old man in the water, drifting towards the path of a departing cargo vessel.
“The man suffered minor injuries to his hand and the effects of immersion in the water and was treated by paramedics at the scene.”
