Man City apologise for Hillsborough chanting

Manchester City have apologised for fans who chanted during a minute’s silence to mark the Hillborough anniversary.

Referee Michael Oliver was forced to cut short the tribute to 97 Liverpool fans killed in the 1989 disaster before Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

A section of City supporters broke into terrace songs during the planned period of reflection, which drew boos from their Anfield counterparts.

In a statement shortly after the incident, the Premier League champions condemned those that had disrupted the silence and apologised to the Reds.

A City spokesperson said: “Manchester City are extremely disappointed with the actions of some City supporters during the minute’s silence before today’s game.

“The club sincerely apologises to all those connected with Liverpool Football Club.”

City manager Pep Guardiola reaffirmed his club’s stance following the game, which Liverpool ran out 3-2 winners, when asked about the disrupted tribute.

He said: “This is not Manchester City.

“We are close to Liverpool club for the tragedy that happened years ago. We are alongside them.

“After these guys singing (it) doesn’t represent what we are.”
