World Cup winner joins Liverpool backroom

Brazil legend Claudio Taffarel has joined Liverpool’s coaching setup.

Taffarel becomes the latest member of Jurgen Klopp’s backroom staff in a move which will strengthen the Anfield club’s goalkeeper department.

The 55-year-old is set to work alongside existing coaches John Achterberg and Jack Robinson in the development of the Reds’ last line of defence.

Taffarel will divide his time between the AXA Training Centre and his duties with the Brazil national team, where he has previously linked up with Alisson.

After a playing career which included spells with Galatasaray and Parma ended, he rejoined the Istanbul club as their goalkeeping coach in 2004.

Klopp revealed on Tuesday that the World Cup winner’s arrival was borne from a discussion with Alisson about Liverpool’s goalkeeping philosophy.

He said: “We want to build kind of our own philosophy in goalkeeping because we all agree it’s its own game.

“So that’s why we wanted to have another completely different view on it.

“We spoke to Ali because two of the best goalies in the world are Brazilians and so we found a solution with bringing in Taffarel as a really nice addition to our whole coaching staff.

“We really think it can give us just a different view again, to look at different things.

“We really want to really be a proper goalkeeping school in world football and so that’s why we’re bringing in a third very, very experienced goalkeeper coach.”
