Curtis Jones set to claim Liverpool milestone

Curtis Jones will make his 50th Liverpool appearance on Tuesday night.

Jones has become a semi-regular figure for Jurgen Klopp’s side since a debut in the FA Cup third round exit to Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2019.

The homegrown midfielder’s last outing as a substitute in last weekend’s win over Crystal Palace took him to within one game of reaching a half-century.

And Klopp’s assistant Pep Lijnders confirmed that Jones, 20, is in line to reach his personal milestone in the Reds’ Carabao Cup third round tie with Norwich.

He said: “First of all, this League Cup competition has proven gold for us.

“I want to give one [name] who is going to start tomorrow and that is Curtis Jones.

“Why do I want to say his name? Because he will play his 50th game.

“It all started with these kind of games.

“There are so many diamonds, so many special players, who just can’t wait to make these steps so it is important we keep doing this.

“With one we push, we inspire the entire academy so we have to keep the logic of the inside pathway.”

Jones’ fellow Academy graduate Kaide Gordon is also in line to feature at Carrow Road after impressing Liverpool’s backroom staff during the summer.

The young winger attracted the Anfield faithful’s attention with a second-half cameo in a 3-1 win over Osasuna in their final pre-season friendly last month.

“Before pre-season we always make sure our biggest talents start a week earlier than we start,” added Lijnders.

“They start with the under-23s so I went to the training ground, watching and I saw one player and he has fire in each moment that he touches the ball.

“He passes players like they are not standing there. I called Jurgen immediately and was like, ‘wow! We have a new player here’.”
