Liverpool have condemned fans who made homophobic chants in their win at Norwich City.
Saturday’s Premier League opener saw the Reds record a routine 3-0 victory at Carrow Road with goals from Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.
But Jurgen Klopp’s side were overshadowed by a minority of away supporters who aimed offensive jibes at Norwich’s on-loan midfielder Billy Gilmour.
The Scotland international was routinely targeted throughout the game with homophobic slurs in the game on account of Chelsea being his parent club.
Liverpool’s LGBT+ fan group Kop Outs publicly disavowed the chants, which were also castigated by Anfield chiefs on the club’s official Twitter account.
“The chant is offensive and inappropriate – a message we have repeatedly communicated alongside Kop Outs,” read a club statement.
“We urge supporters to remember the inclusive values of the club and to refrain from using it in the future.”
European champions Chelsea are set to travel to Merseyside in a fortnight’s time to take on Liverpool in the Premier League’s late game on Saturday, August 28.
