Liverpool pocket £17m from misfit departures

Liverpool have recouped £17 million selling Taiwo Awoniyi and Marko Grujic.

Grujic became Jurgen Klopp’s first signing at Anfield when he arrived from Red Star Belgrade in January 2016 for a fee in the region of £5 million.

However the midfielder made only made only 16 first-team appearances in all competitions across a five-year period with only five of them being starts.

The Serbia international, 25, spent a succession of loan spells with former club Red Star Belgrade, Cardiff City, Hertha Berlin and most recently Porto.

He scored twice in 23 appearances for the Primeira Liga outfit, who have now made his stay a long-term one in a deal understood to be worth £10.5 million.

Porto claim Grujic’s arrival is on loan with an obligation to buy next summer however the Reds have insisted that the player’s departure is permanent.

Also leaving Merseyside is striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who has joined Union Berlin following a six-year spell on Liverpool’s books despite not playing a game.

Work permit issues meant the Nigerian spent his entire Anfield career on loan at Frankfurt, NEC, Mouscron, Gent, Mainz as well as with his new employers.

Awoniyi moves to the German capital for a fee of £6.5 million, giving Liverpool a tidy profit on their original £400,000 outlay to the Imperial Soccer Academy.

Both the 23-year-old and Grujic had been with Klopp’s side at their pre-season training camp in the Austrian town of Saalfelden prior to their moves.

Liverpool kicked off their preparations for the new campaign with successive 1-1 draws in 30-minute encounters against Wacker Innsbruck and Stuttgart.

Divock Origi and Sadio Mane scored a goal apiece while summer signing Ibrahima Konate made his first appearance since joining from RB Leipzig.
