Liverpool lined up for Houllier memorial game

Liverpool have been lined up for a friendly in Gerard Houllier’s memory.

Houllier passed away in December last year aged 73 following heart surgery in his native France, leaving behind an impressive coaching legacy.

He won six major trophies across as many years at Anfield with a hat-trick coming in 2000/01 alongside securing a Champions League qualification spot.

Now Lyon, another of Houllier’s former clubs, are seeking to have the Reds participate in a game to commemorate their late manager’s memory.

The Ligue 1 outfit are already planning to rename their training ground after he steered them to back-to-back domestic titles in the mid to late 2000s.

But Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has outlined plans to incorporate a match with Liverpool as Houllier’s most esteemed former employers.

“We will organise a match, a trophy with Liverpool,” he told Eurosport.

“We are in the process of formalising this whole event.

“We will have the opportunity to achieve this trophy against Liverpool and ensure that we remember that Gerard was great in Lyon but also in Liverpool and Paris.”

Jurgen Klopp’s side took on Lyon in 2019 as part of their pre-season schedule with the erstwhile European champions running out 3-1 winners in Geneva.

The only competitive meetings between the sides came a decade earlier in the Champions League group stages with Les Gones taking four points.
