Latest Hillsborough trial details confirmed

Three men facing charges over the Hillsborough tragedy will face trial in April.

Former South Yorkshire Police chiefs Donald Denton and Alan Foster, and the force’s ex-solicitor Peter Metcalf stand accused of perverting the course of justice.

Previous hearings linked to the 1989 disaster in Sheffield, where 96 Liverpool fans were unlawfully killed, were previously held at Preston Crown Court.

But last year’s trial was adjourned until January on grounds of ill health due to Foster being a full-time carer for his wife, a Motor Neurone Disease sufferer.

The latest hearings are now set to take place at The Lowry in Salford, which has been converted into a ‘Nightingale’ court due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A start date of April 19 falls just four days after the 32nd anniversary of the tragedy and will be presided over by judge Mr Justice William Davies.

All three men have been charged in connection with changes made to witness statements about the events which unfolded at Hillsborough on 15 April 1989.
