Angela Eagle has been made a dame in the 2021 New Years Honours List.
The long-serving Labour MP, 59, received the prestigious accolade in recognition of her work promoting women’s and minority rights.
Ms Eagle won the parliamentary right to represent Wallasey at the 1992 general election and has successfully defended the seat on seven occasions.
She also worked in a number of prominent roles in Tony Blair’s Government and later served under Gordon Brown, Ed Miliband and Jeremy Corbyn.
The current Labour leader Sir Kier Starmer hailed her accolade recognition for ‘a true public servant and a powerful voice for women and LGBT people’.
Another Merseyside resident honoured was Pauline Fielding, who received an MBE for campagining for better road safety following her son’s 1994 death.
Andrew Fielding was killed on the A540 in Neston at the age of just 18.
Belatedly, Chester West and Cheshire Council agreed to improve safety measures on their roads as a result of Mrs Fielding’s tireless campaigning.
She said: “I’m absolutely delighted. It has taken 26 years but at long last things are about to improve. Giving up was never an option.
“I know this is the sort of thing Andrew would have wanted me to do.
“I’m sure he would be very happy that some good had come from the terrible tragedy that happened.”
