Henderson crowned Footballer of the Year

Jordan Henderson has been crowned the Footballer of the Year for 2020.

Henderson saw off competition from Kevin de Bruyne and Marcus Rashford to win the award after guiding Liverpool to a long-awaited Premier League title.

Several of the Reds captain’s teammates were also in the running for the personal accolade chosen by members of the Football Writers’ Association.

Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson received nominations but Henderson won comfortably with over a quarter of the vote.

The England international becomes the 14th player from Anfield to earn the distinction, with Ian Callaghan recording the club’s first win in 1973/74.

Henderson’s on-field exploits in Liverpool’s title-winning campaign has been matched by a pioneering role in founding the Players Together initiative.

He said: “I accept it on behalf of this whole squad, because without them I’m not in a position to be receiving this honour.

“These lads have made me a better player – a better leader and a better person. If anything I hope those who voted for me did so partly to recognise the entire team’s contribution.

“Individual awards are nice and they are special and I will cherish this one.

“But an individual award without the collective achievement wouldn’t mean anywhere as much to me – if anything at all.”
