Arrest threat for Anfield street gatherers

Liverpool fans risk arrest if they gather outside Anfield on Wednesday night.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are set to lift their first-ever Premier League title in a ceremony following their final home game of the season against Chelsea.

Thousands of fans previously defied social distancing measures in place due to the coronavirus by celebrating directly outside the stadium last month.

More descended on the Pier Head just 24 hours later amid ugly scenes which saw fireworks deliberately aimed at the city’s iconic Royal Liver Building.

In efforts to prevent a repeat of the incidents, key Anfield figures including Klopp and captain Jordan Henderson have urged supporters to stay at home.

Merseyside Police are also denying claims emanating on social media that the Reds’ players will parade the trophy outside from the Main Stand’s balcony.

The force insists that its officers will use powers to limit mass gatherings by arresting those who travel to Anfield for the behind closed doors game.

Chief constable Andy Cooke said: “It’s no secret I am a Liverpool supporter but my duty to the city and the communities of Merseyside will come first.

“We are still in a public health crisis and I urge people to watch the match at home or in a local pub if there is space.

“But please don’t put yourselves, your loved ones and others at risk of contracting this virus by ignoring the current advice not to gather in large groups.

“My officers will take action if people don’t adhere to social distancing regulations and potentially put other members of the public at risk.

“We understand the desire to celebrate, show the team our appreciation and have a massive party but now is not the time for celebration.

“We have waited 30 years so a few more months isn’t too much to ask.”
