A woman has been taken to hospital after being shot by police in Toxteth.
Officers from Merseyside Police were called to Cairns Street at 1.50pm on Thursday to reports of a woman armed with a knife.
Patrols attended the scene and a female was shot by police and suffered an injury to her upper body. She has been taken to hospital for treatment.
The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
Liverpool’s Community Policing Superintendent Diane Pownall has attempted to reassure residents in Toxteth and across the city following the incident.
She said: “This was an isolated incident in which officers responded to a number of members of the public reporting a woman in possession of a knife in the Toxteth area.
“We are not looking for anyone else in connection to the incident.
“The matter has been referred to the IOPC and we will be co-operating fully with their investigation in the coming days and weeks.”
