Henderson sets up coronavirus NHS fund

Jordan Henderson has set up a fund to help the NHS tackle the coronavirus.

The Liverpool captain reached out to his Premier League counterparts to organise the initiative which will be funded by players’ wage contributions.

Health secretary Matt Hancock accused top-flight footballers of ‘not playing their part’ in the UK’s bid to tackle Covid-19 by taking voluntary pay cuts.

The Premier League has since pledged £20 million to help front line workers in its announcement that the 2019/20 season will remain on indefinite hiatus.

But Henderson’s proposal, which has been unanimously backed, was floated before Friday’s announcement and predated Hancock’s attack on the industry.

Several banks have already been approached to hold the donations while players will follow NHS advice on how best to distribute the funds raised.

Premier League games had been expected to resume from April 30 but that has been postponed until further notice in line with government advice.

Henderson previously pledged the Reds’ first-team squad’s support to Fans Supporting Foodbanks during the hiatus caused by the coronavirus outbreak.

Liverpool separately committed to donating £10,000 for each of their remaining four matches at Anfield where foodbank collections normally take place.
