Public transport across Merseyside will be scaled back due to coronavirus.
Merseyrail will run services on all lines every 30 minutes from Thursday in line with Government advice on containing the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The region’s leading bus companies Stagecoach and Arriva confirmed that they will also be running amended services from the following Monday (March 23).
People are urged to pay by contactless where possible and using cash as a last resort in efforts to reduce risk of infection to drivers and fellow passengers.
Steve Rotheram, Metro Mayor for the Liverpool City Region, has requested the public to follow Government advice on essential travel before planning journeys.
He said: “We find ourselves in very challenging times and I am strongly urging people to continue to follow the national advice to only use public transport for essential journeys.
“During this serious situation which has ramifications for both the number of travellers and staff, revised timetables are being introduced.
“However, I fully appreciate that we have city region residents who do need to travel, especially if they carry out essential services for our communities, and we will support them to get to where they need to be.
“I pay tribute to those workers in the transport sector, and indeed across all our public services, who are doing everything they can to provide those services in difficult circumstances.”
Commuters are advised to consult transport operators’ websites for the most up-to-date timetables as well as the Government’s latest health advice.
