There has been backlash as the leader of a far-right Italian political party is planning to visit Liverpool.
An advert has appeared on the Eventbrite website suggesting that Matteo Salvini would be hosting an event at a Bold Street restaurant.
Matteo Salvini was Deputy Prime Minister of Italy until September last year. He is well known for his extreme anti-immigrant stance and has previously called for a “mass cleaning” of his home country.
It is understood one of his key political intentions was to force a national census in order to identify and deport Roma people from Italy.
It is unclear as to whether the event will actually host Mr Salvini or if it is an event for his supporters. The information is vague and the actual location of the venue is not released until you have booked a ticket.
The event is run by Lega Nel Mondo which describes itself as a “community for Italians living abroad”. It goes on to describe itself as being the ” federal department of the League for Salvini”. This was the name of the party which Matteo Salvini was head of when he became deputy prime minister.
Liverpool has a strong history of running fascist groups out of the city and it seems that this will be another to add to the list.
Information about the event has been shared on social media and has gathered attention from anti-fascist groups.
