After setting out last season to win the Premier League but ended the season with the highest point tally not to win the league, Liverpool will be out again to try to win the title that has eluded the club for three decades now. Winning the Champions League last season was a great achievement for everyone at the club, considering that they haven’t won anything under manager, Jurgen Klopp.
The aim of the Red army this term will be to win the Premier League and every other thing will be an addition. They seem at this point obsessed with winning the league, like sport betting are won with NJ Games, which in hindsight is not a bad thing. It is just how the club has been structured and the league system that Liverpool might not be ready for.
The lessons were there for them from last season and it has to be highlighted first and looked at to see how they could improve on it for the new season.
It has to start with the fact that they had the league in their hands and blew it away. This has to be admitted for a team that wants it desperately. Liverpool is not a team structure for a marathon but a sprint. This has to be the first thing that will change if they want the title to move from Etihad to Anfield by 2020.
Every game counts equally at the end of the season on the table and amassing as many points as possible regardless of your rival’s form is key to their title challenge. The squad is there to compete for the title just the mentality missing. That has to be instilled by the manager in the players. The main rival this season will still be Manchester City so there won’t be an opportunity to relax when competing against a Pep Guardiola’s side.
There are few changes to the league that Liverpool has to be prepared for as the season is about to start. Myphonefootball confirming the introduction of Video Assistant Referee, VAR is what the club should expect to go either way in decisions. Mo Sallah got some penalty calls in his favor that will definitely not stay if given a second looking on the VAR, same as every team in the league. Winning the league is all about the little margins. When you are prepared for the margins, it becomes easier.
Liverpool should also know that a system that allows the team much more balance in the attack should be adopted. The front three of Sallah, Firmino, and Mane have been known for years now in the league and it won’t surprise many when they start getting found out. It will be great if Klopp start finding a way to get Divock Origi more playing time and try out another form that allows more flexibility.
Knowing fully well that what they set out to win the league, it will be an interesting season to watch from start to finish and every point lost is a move away from winning their first league title.
