Housing Councillor urges not to give money to the homeless

A Liverpool councillor has said that if you want to help homeless people in the city – you should not give them money.

Cllr Frank Hont  has said that instead of giving cash to homeless people on the streets, you should make a donation to a recognised charity in order to “make a real difference.”

Just last week more than a hundred men and women met in the city centre to show their support on a public march in memory of a homeless man named Simon who died after living on the streets.

In a letter to the ECHO, troche Cllr Hont thanked Sara for her “interest in the issue and willingness to help those who are in need”.

Part of the letter read: “Put simply it is far more effective to give money to organisations which work with the homeless and rough sleepers than handing over cash on the street.”

The letter concluded: “We are making every effort to tackle the myriad and complex issues associated with homelessness.

“However, it has to be recognised that not every person who is offered help to address their rough sleeping will choose to accept that support.”

Liverpool council has recently launched a new campaign to tackle homelessness.

Change£? will work with The Whitechapel Centre and The Liverpool BID Company to help improve the city’s homeless services.
