Iconic Futurist cinema at “risk of collapse”

Scaffolding has been placed on The Futurist Cinema and the area surrounding it cordoned off as the cinema is at risk of collapse.

The building has been earmarked for demolition however last week the council started emergency works on the building after concerns over the safety of the building was raised.

The Echo has stated that they have seen a report which deems the building at “a particular risk of collapse onto Lime Street”.

The Structural Assessment Report, seen by The Echo, was carried out independently for Neptune, the developers who are behind the proposed multi-million pound Lime Street regeneration.

The report says that “following years of neglect the building is now in a severely dilapidated condition”.

The Futurist Cinema has been the subject of a legal battle between the council and developers with heritage campaigners who want to protect the building from demolition.

Heritage groups including SAVE Britain’s Heritage have challenged the plans through the courts over fears of the developments potential negative impact on Liverpool’s historic city centre.

After the announcements that emergency works were taking place on the building the president of SAVE Britain’s Heritage, Marcus Binney, said he was “very alarmed” by the news.

He said: “While it is right to take precautionary measures if necessary, this should be to hold the building up, not demolish it.”

Engineers who examined the building last week told the council that the building was now dilapidated “to the extent where we consider a dangerous structure notice should be placed upon it”.
