Futurist Cinema declared as unsafe ahead of demolition

The Futurist Cinema on Lime Street has been declared as unsafe, link ahead of its scheduled demolition later this year.

The iconic building is set to be knocked down to make way for new student accommodation and retail units, however building inspectors have now given Liverpool City Council five days to make it safe.

The Council are now set to secure the building before demolition work can begin on the Neptune redevelopment project.

The Futurist served as working cinema from 1912 to 1982, drugs and the building itself, particularly the facade and balcony, has been the subject of a campaign to save it.

However despite over 2000 signatures on a preservation petition in 2012, independent building contractors declared the Futurist dangerous and authorised its demolition.

As a point of compromise Neptune have agreed to create a balcony using the Futurist Picturehouse sign as part of the new building facade.
