Merseyside fundraiser plots gruelling schedule of five marathons in five days

A Merseyside man who cycled 10,000 miles from China to Liverpool in the name of charity has announced plans for a gruelling new schedule featuring five marathons in as many days.

Andrew Robertson of Halewood, who was aptly nicknamed the ‘Cycling Scouser’ after last year’s remarkable feat, has signalled his intention to run a mammoth five marathons in the Jordanian desert, followed by a 3,000 mile row across the Atlantic Ocean in December.

The seemingly indefatigable 30-year-old has raised thousands of pounds for cancer charity Anthony Nolan after being inspired by the plight of a close friend’s four-year-old son who had been diagnosed with leukaemia and was in urgent need of a bone marrow transplant.

Andrew said: “I more than doubled my fundraising target – it currently stands at over £24,000 and it spurred me on to come up with something even bigger and better.

“More people have been in space than have rowed solo across an ocean, so it’s definitely a step up from the bike ride.

“It’s going to be the hardest thing I’ve done to date.

“Among the dangers I’ll be facing will be the boat capsizing, as well as sharks.

“And if something does happen to me, there’ll be no-one there to raise the alarm. Despite the risks, this is my kind of challenge.”
