Liverpool FC frustrated in Naby Keita pursuit

Liverpool are continuing to be frustrated in their attempts to sign Naby Keita.

The midfielder has become the Reds’ priority signing this summer following their botched pursuit of Virgil van Dijk but face a renewed resistance from RB Leipzig.

Keita is understood to be keen on a move to Anfield although he is currently unwilling to engineer the move away from last season’s Bundesliga runners-up.

Jurgen Klopp hopes that the Guinea international’s future will become clearer when he reports back for pre-season training with Leipzig on Thursday.

Liverpool are prepared to break their transfer record to land Keita although that does not guarantee that he will be allowed to leave the East German club.

Both Leipzig’s sporting director Ralf Rangnick and CEO Oliver Mintzlaff have reiterated in recent weeks that the club’s best players will not be sold.

Klopp remains unconcerned by Liverpool’s lack of transfer business when questioned about it following a 4-0 friendly win over Tranmere on Wednesday.

He said: “If any of our fans think about what the other teams are doing and why we aren’t doing anything, I can’t help, sorry.

“We cannot only buy players because other teams buy players.

“We do our business as good as we can do it and we are completely in it and we are convinced about the way that we are going so that’s all.

“Nervous fans? Sorry, I cannot help, I don’t have to write a message for this. I’m not nervous – maybe that’s the right message for this.

“We have until August 31, we have time and sometimes things need time.

“We’ll do transfers because we want to do them, if not it’s because we don’t want to do them. So we have to wait a bit.”
