Mayor of Liverpool pledges to £1 billion to build 10,000 new homes in city

Plans for 10, no rx 000 “rent to buy” houses across Liverpool have been revealed under £1bn plans.

City Mayor Joe Anderson has described the project as ‘the biggest and boldest house building programme, pill probably in Europe.’

Under the plans he has vowed to bring more home ownership to the people of Liverpool than ever before.

The plans make up a key part of his mayoral election manifesto as he is up against six other hopefuls for the job.

The scheme will aim to allow people to rent the homes, with part of the cash being diverted to a trust to build up a deposit for tenants to later buy the property if they choose.

Anderson has already earmarked brownfield sites across the city which could be used for development. The locations include areas in Norris Green, Croxteth, Fazakerley and South Liverpool.

Another potential site could revolve around the Garden Festival site.

Mayor Anderson said: “This is exactly the type of bold and yet practical measure that I want to pursue as Mayor.

“It will help us to address issues around the provision and quality of homes in the city, as well as creating jobs, apprenticeships, supporting local businesses and tackling the issue of affordability.

“We have seen what happens when the property market is left to pure market forces: massive inequalities set in that make it so difficult for millions of families to even contemplate getting on the housing ladder. I am determined to do something about this.
