Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has admitted defender Mamadou Sakho never convinced him.
The Frenchman looks set to depart Anfield on transfer deadline day, with Crystal Palace having entered the race for his signature.
Sakho has not played for the Reds since last April when he was banned by UEFA after testing positive for a banned substance.
That ban saw him miss both the Europa League final with his club and then France’s run to the final of Euro 2016.
It was later overturned but he has found himself exiled from first team selection after being sent home from Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the USA.
Since then he has been training and playing for the Under 23 side after Jurgen Klopp refused to offer him a way back.
With a departure now looking likely, Carragher has admitted Sakho never convinced him despite some positive performances.
“He’s come in and I was never quite convinced in him if I’m totally honest,” he told the Liverpool Echo.
“He became a cult hero with the supporters, for one reason or another. He put some great displays in last season, especially in the Europa League.
“Then there was the situation with him missing the (Europa League) final because of the drugs test.
“But I don’t think the manager was ever really convinced. He brought Matip in and was always going to go with him and Lovren.
“There were obviously a few misdemeanours during pre-season and the manager dealt with it. I think it’s best for all parties concerned that he moves on.”
