Liverpool City Council have rejected plans to build 160 homes on greenfield land.
A proposal by Redrow Homes would have seen the space on Woolton Road, previously part of the Allerton Priory estate, was rebuffed by planning chiefs.
The plans were met with strong opposition by both local councillors and campaign groups, who lodged objections at the planning permission hearing.
Over 2,500 people also backed a petition against the scheme, which the council’s committee said would have an ‘intrusive and urbanising’ impact on the area.
The obstructed views of both Allerton Priory and Priory Lodge were also cited in the council’s rejection of the housing giant’s outline planning permission.
Redrow now have the option to appeal the ruling within a six-month period.
“We’re disappointed with the planning committee’s decision,” a statement read.
“We will now take some time to fully review the planning committee’s decision and reasoning.”
