Merseyside’s most wanted fugitive fights extradition from Ghana

Merseyside fugitive David McDermott is continuing to fight his extradition back to the UK following his arrest in Ghana earlier this month.

In a bid to extend his avoidance of British law, McDermott has reportedly married into one of the richest family’s in Ghana, with his new father-in-law the governor of the country’s Central Bank.

McDermott, from Ormskirk, was arrested on March 11 in the capital Accra, following a coordinated Police investigation between the British and Ghanaian authorities.

McDermott has been on the run since 2011, after it was alleged that he was part of a Liverpool gang that attempted to smuggle 400 kilos of cocaine into the country, hidden inside frozen Argentinean beef.

Police in Ghana have confirmed that McDermott continues to be held in custody, after they received an arrest warrant from a judge in Liverpool, amid speculation that McDermott has been in contact with his accomplices from the 2011 haul.

Following his arrest, McDermott’s father-in-law Dr Henry Kofi Wampah has issued a formal statement stating that he had no knowledge of McDermott’s criminal status in the UK.

The extradition hearing continues.
